  Oil and gas faculty was one of the first faculties of the University of Atyrau Oil and Gas University in 1990 and was renamed into the Faculty of Oil. On the basis of the Faculty of Oil and Gas two large "technology" and "economics" faculties have been created, therefore the Faculty of Oil and Gas is recognized as “Kara Shanyrak”.  In the same year in 1990 the department "Geology", "General Physics" was formed. In 1992 the cathedra "Oil and Gas Well Drilling" and "Oil and Gas Field Development" were established. In 2009 the cathedra of "Geodesy, Cartography and Land Management" was opened.

The professorial-teaching staff of oil and gas faculty are the graduates of the leading oil and technical universities of Astana, Almaty, Moscow, Leningrad, Ufa, Grozny, Tashkent and many others. Currently, there are 75 teachers, including 8 Doctors of Science, 22 Candidates of Science, 20 AOGI Associate Professors, 15 Senior Lecturers and 10 Lecturers.

The Republic of Kazakhstan for 2015-2019 within the framework of the State program of industrial-innovative development, at the Oil and Gas Faculty specialties 5B070800 - "Oil and Gas Business" for 2015-2016 academic year state educational grants were allocated for the educational program "Development and operation of oil and gas in the land and sea", 72 students were enrolled , in the 2016-2017 academic year 30 students were enrolled in state educational grants under the educational program "Production of wells and preparation". The Republic of Kazakhstan for 2015-2019 within the State Program of Industrial and Innovative Development 102 students have been enrolled and trained in state educational grants in specialty 5B070800 - Oil and Gas business in 2 years.

          In order to improve the quality of specialists the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2015-2019 within the framework of the state program of industrial-innovative development, a new virtual auditorium "Virtual Field" was opened. On this unique device the students of oil and gas faculty hone their knowledge.

In the 2016-2017 academic year 8 students of oil and gas faculty are studying in the leading universities of Poland (Leshno), Italy (Turin), China (Shinjiang) in the frame of the program “Academic mobility”.

The teaching staff of the faculty has been trained in the leading universities of the USA, Finland, Scotland, France, Czech Republic and Russia.

The students of the 3-4 courses in the specialties 5В070800 - "Oil and gas business" and 5В070600 - "Geology and exploration of the mineral resources" study in the frame of the dual program "Polygon". They work at the "Embamunaygaz" and "ZhigerMunayService" production sites, thus they study and work at the same time. Graduates of this program will receive a work record book together with the diploma at the end of the program.

The faculty has good relations with oil and gas production facilities in the region. Oil and gas companies provide sponsorship assistance to students of the faculty by paying tuition fees.

The 3rd and 4th course students of the Faculty of Oil and Gas will be trained on industrial and diploma work practices on the base of JSC Embamunaygas, Caspiymunaygaz, Maten Petroleum, Caspian Energy Resarch, JSC KazNIGRI.
